A cold front will slice into Alabama tomorrow, and with decent upper air support we have the potential for strong to severe storms, and significant rain amounts.
PLACEMENT: SPC maintains the standard “slight risk” (level 2/5) of severe storms basically from Birmingham south, with a “marginal risk” (level 1/5) northward up to the Tennessee River
Guidance from high resolution models suggests the core threat will be over the southern half of the state, where there will be some surface based instability. Temperatures will fall over North Alabama tomorrow afternoon; reaching the 40s with a brisk north wind.
TIMING: While a large mass rain will move into North Alabama tomorrow morning, the main chance of severe storms will come from noon until 8 p.m.
THREATS: Heavier storms tomorrow will be capable of producing hail and strong gusty winds. There is also a low end tornado threat over the southern half of the state.
FLOODING: Rain amounts of 1-2 inches are likely; we don’t expect widespread flash flooding, but a few isolated issues are possible. This rain won’t make state rivers rise again, but it will serve to keep them above flood stage longer.
FOOTBALL WEATHER: The Birmingham Iron will host San Antonio at Legion Field tomorrow afternoon (3:00p CT kickoff)… the good news is that it looks like the heavier rain/storms will be over by kickoff. The sky will be cloudy during the game with a chance of lingering light rain. Much colder air will move in, and temperatures fall from the upper 50s at kickoff into the 40s during the second half. A brisk northwest wind will make it feel colder.
COLD AIR: Much colder air rolls into Alabama tomorrow afternoon into tomorrow night, and highs will be in the 40s Monday through Wednesday. Early morning lows drop well down into the 20s early Tuesday and Wednesday morning, with potential for upper teens across colder pockets at daybreak Wednesday. A warming trend begins Thursday afternoon.
As always, be sure and keep up with forecast updates later today, and have a way of hearing warnings if they are needed tomorrow.
