Merry Christmas everyone! Well, 2017 will go down as another year for the city of Birmingham without a “White Christmas,” so the ole Bing Crosby hit will be in my song selection for the Christmas season in 2018. At 11:50 AM today, skies are mostly clear with some high clouds filtering out some of the sunshine from reaching the surface, but I still don’t think it is making a big difference in temperatures.

We are ranging from the mid to upper 30s in the north, with upper 30s to the mid-40s to the south. Birmingham was at 36 degrees, while the warm spot is Eufaula at 46 degrees. Winds are quite breezy at times out of the north, making the wind chill values around 3-7 degrees cooler than the actual temperature.

For the remainder of the daylight hours, we can continue to expect those high clouds overhead that will keep it from reaching the full potential brightness outside. Another guarantee today is that those temperatures will not rise much at all, with highs only reaching the upper 30s to the upper 40s throughout Central Alabama from north to south. Those high clouds will stick around throughout the evening and the overnight hours. Lows will bottom out in the mid to upper 20s throughout the area before sunrise.

For the day after Christmas, we’ll have a mix of sun and clouds throughout the area, but temperatures on average will be around ten degrees warmer than today. Afternoon highs will top out in the upper 40s to the mid-50s from north to south. Clouds will become mostly cloudy during the overnight hours, and there will be a very small chance of a few showers or some sleet after midnight, but travel problems and accumulations are not expected. Lows will be in the 30s to near 40 degrees.

On This Day In Weather History
2006 – Severe thunderstorms produced four tornadoes in Florida. Columbia, Pasco, Lake and Volusia counties were hardest-hit, including the Daytona Beach area. A tornado generated considerable damage on the campus of Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University, delaying the start of the spring semester.
