Not this year. We have been lucky, although it is heating up somewhat now.

We can have some significant heat in Central Alabama even before the official arrival of summer. The month of May, 1962, is a marked example:

….16 of the 31 record highs at Birmingham for the month of May occurred in 1962.

….The high was between 96 and 98 every day for seven days in a row between the 16th and 22nd–all records that still stand.

….It was 97 on this date (today) in 1962, another record that still stands.

….The average high in Birmingham for a May 20 is 82 so that record was 15 degrees too hot.

…The tired thermometer was in the 90s 24 days in a row in May, 1962 except for 88 on the 23rd.

….The average high for that May was 92.3 which is even hotter than the average high for a July day.

….Only eight days failed to reach 90.

….99 on the 28th tied the all time high for the entire month of May.

….15 days had 95 or hotter.

….In late spring and summer, heat and drought are first cousins. Between may 2 and 28 in 1962 (26 days in a row, the total rain at Birmingham Airport was a sprinkle (trace) on the 4th.

….Finally, a break at the very end of the month when the high on the 30th and 31st was 88 and 82 and we finally got 0.90 rain on the 30th. If we had not received that 0.90, our total dose of rain for the entire month would have been o.36.

….Anxiously awaiting mid-October…
