Before leaving New Hampshire after the mesoscale processes conference, we decided to take the road up Mt. Washington. It is the highest peak in the northeast U.S. (6288 ft.), or 4725 feet above the base, and known for its terrible weather, including cold temperatures and high winds. The summit is in the clouds 60% of the time, and hurricane force winds occur 104 days per year. Its average annual temperature is 27, and its record high is 72.

I have to tell you, I was a bit nervous on the drive. I can only imagine what it must be like on a day with high winds and clouds. Your car occasionally overheats, and you can smell the brakes of the people’s cars coming back down.

The view from the top of the mountain is amazing, as are many of the views in the White Mountains of New Hampshire. To check out their weather, the observation is KMWN.
