Friend of the Blog Chuck Biddinger asked if these photos of a frozen Niagara Falls are for real. They are part of a popular email that circulates from time to time.
According to Snopes.com, it is difficult to tell when they are from. They appear to be genuine, however.
An ice bridge did form over the falls in 1912, with tragic results as three people were sent to their deaths when the bridge broke.
The falls did come to a halt in March 1848 when an upstream ice jam brought the river to a trickle. The falls froze for a time during the reduced water flow.
The last time the falls froze was 1936, according to what I read.
So, the photos appear to be real. The time is uncertain.
Thanks Chuck.
