Other than a few cumulus clouds overhead, a good bit of sunshine is out there shining on Central Alabama at this 1 o’clock hour. Radar is free from any rain in the area, but a few showers have starting popping up in the southern part of the state. With the sunshine it is warmer outside at this point as well, with current temperatures running in the lower to mid-80s for the northern half of Central Alabama, with mid-80s to 90 degrees across the southern half.
Skies will remain mostly clear to partly cloudy out there across Central Alabama for the remainder of the afternoon and into the early evening hours. There is a very small risk of an isolated shower to two across the extreme southern locations of the area, mainly south of a line from Demopolis to Montgomery to Auburn. The rest of the are will be dry and mighty warm. Afternoon highs will make it up into the mid-80s to the lower 90s throughout the area. Those rain chances in the south will continue into the evening hours but will dissipate as we lose the sunshine. Most, if not every, high school football game will be dry at kickoff, with temperatures running in the upper 70s to the lower 80s area-wide, and falling into the lower to mid-70s by 10:00 PM. Overnight lows will be in the mid to upper 60s, with some patchy fog possible throughout the area.
The Central Alabama Weekend will start off on Saturday with a chance of scattered showers and storms throughout the area, with the better coverage in the southern half of the area especially down to the southeastern corner of the area. Afternoon highs will be in the mid to upper 80s. Sundays weather will be drier, but we’ll have a very small risk of an isolated shower or two throughout the area. Highs will top out in the mid to upper 80s.
If going to any of the college football games on Saturday, there is a small chance for a passing shower or storm, so be ready just in case you hear thunder. Kickoff for UAB will be at noon at Legion Field, with temperatures ranging from around 83 degrees to 87 degrees throughout the game. Kickoff for Auburn on the plains will be at 3:00 PM, with temperatures ranging from 83 degrees at kickoff to 79 degrees at the end of the game. Kickoff in Tuscaloosa for Alabama will be at 6:00 PM, with temperatures starting off near 83 degrees and falling to near 78 degrees by the end of the game.
Tropical Storm Jose is moving toward the northwest near 9 MPH, and is forecast to continue in this direction today, followed by a turn to the north-northwest by late Saturday and toward the north on Sunday. Maximum sustained winds remain near 70 mph with higher gusts. Some strengthening is forecast during the next 48 hours. Swells generated by Jose are affecting Bermuda, the Bahamas, the northern coasts of Hispaniola and Puerto Rico, and the southeast coast of the United States, and will spread northward along the Mid-Atlantic coast of the U.S. during the next few days. These swells are likely to cause life-threatening surf and rip current conditions.
