A dry weekend in store for Central Alabama, but the pattern looks favorable for showers this next week as moisture returns to the picture and temperatures shift to above average for much of the upcoming week.

I noted a few days ago – with all the weather it seems more like a month ago – that we only need about four and a half inches to be on the mark for average rain for Birmingham. Well, we got most of that with the current 2008 rainfall total standing at 53.22 inches – that’s about three-quarters of an inch below our annual average of 53.99 inches.

With nearly three weeks remaining in the month, it seems like a pretty sure bet that Birmingham will be at or above average for this year. While possible, I just don’t see us going three weeks without getting at least an inch or so. And that’s an improvement of 25 inches over the annual rainfall for 2007!

Unfortunately the long range projections – the seasonal or three monthly outlooks – are pointing to a drier than average time period. Let’s hope that the trend for the first half of December is more realistic for what we will get in early 2009.
