RADAR CHECK: We have a few isolated showers and sprinkles across the Tennessee Valley this afternoon ahead of a cold front moving southward through Tennessee. The rest of Alabama is mostly sunny and warm with temperatures in the low to mid 80s. Scattered showers across North Alabama will end tonight as the front moves south quickly into a dry airmass.

Much cooler air will follow the front; a number of North Alabama communities will dip into the 35-40 degree range early tomorrow, but frost isn’t expected due to a brisk north wind. With a sunny sky tomorrow’s high will be in the 65-75 degree range.

RED FLAG WARNING: A “red flag warning” is in effect tomorrow for AL/MS/GA/SC and some of the adjacent states. A Red Flag Warning is issued by the National Weather Service when weather and fuel conditions are favorable for rapid wildfire growth and extreme fire behavior. A very dry airmass will move into the Deep South tomorrow; humidity levels will be in the 20-25 percent range, and north winds will gust to 30 mph at times. No outdoor burning tomorrow.

Sunday will be another sunny day with a high in the 70s.

NEXT WEEK: The week will be warm with afternoon highs in the low to mid 80s. Moisture levels slowly rise through the week, and we will mention the risk of showers across Alabama on a daily basis Wednesday through Friday. But rain amounts will be generally light, with the higher coverage over the northern counties. Very little rain is expected across South Alabama. See the video briefing for maps, graphics, and more details.

ON THIS DATE IN 1994: An F4 tornado struck the Goshen United Methodist Church, north of Piedmont in southern Cherokee County, killing 20 people during the morning worship service on Palm Sunday; 92 were injured. A warning was issued 12 minutes before the tornado destroyed the church building, but unfortunately they never heard it.

Later that day, an F2 tornado moved through North Shelby County… the tornado extensively damaged businesses and mobile homes and caused damage to Pelham High School. It dissipated just west of Meadowbrook as it moved down Alabama 119.

Look for my next video briefing here by 6:00 a.m. Monday… enjoy the weekend!
