Yee Hah! Ring the bell or do whatever you’d like to announce that we are edging above freezing for the first time in about 43 hours.

The Birmingham International Airport observation sat at 32 at 11 am. The high for the day yesterday was only 32, and we dropped to 32 around 3:53 pm on January 15th. So if my time calculations are right, the Birmingham area was at or below freezing for 43 continuous hours.

Clouds moved in last night and put a blanket on the falling temperatures keeping them about 10 degrees warmer than the morning before. The east central part of Alabama was the exception since the clouds really did not have a huge impact on the temperatures there. But clouds have spread over nearly all of the northern two-thirds of Alabama at late morning.

Radar was picking up scattered echoes in the west central part of the state from Eutaw to Vernon, but it is unlikely that more than a few sprinkles are reaching the ground. The reason is the lowest 5,000 to 6,000 feet were pretty dry, so any falling light precipitation would evaporate.

Interesting to trace the dew points as you go west from Montgomery:
MGM – 7, MEI – 12, JAN – 22, TVR – 26, MLU – 30, SHV – 40

Funny how yesterday looked so pretty outside but it was really cold. Today it looks gray, but the prospects are it will be a tad warmer.
