The thunderstorms over North Central Alabama are capable of producing some big hail.

The NWS just issued a severe thunderstorm warning for Walker and Winston.

Here is the big picture:

The left side of the image is the reflectivity from the BMX radar. The right side in the vertically integrated liquid, a good indicator of hail cores. As you can see, the VIL values are at the top of the scale, indicating big hail. Click the image to enlarge.

Radar indicates hail anywhere from ping pong size to nearly tennis ball size in the hail cores in southeastern Winston County between Double Springs and Arley, in northeastern Walker County northwest of Sipsey and in Cullman County northwest of the Colony.

The storms will reach southwestern Blount County shortly after 6 p.m. and northern Jefferson County before 6:30.

Damaging hail will be a significant threat, but damaging winds are a big possibility as well. Watch out also for very heavy rain and deadly lightning.

Storms over the Tennessee Valley continue to be severe as well. The storm west of Decatur is the strongest. It will reach northwestern Cullman County around 6:45. The storm in Marshall County near Guntersville will reach Blount County soon and affect Etowah County as well. Severe thunderstorm warning now for Marshall will probably be extended into Blount and Etowah as the storms move south.

Storms in Colbert and Lauderdale Counties will affect Marion and Winston Counties in about 90 minutes as well.
