RADAR CHECK: Most of Alabama is rain-free this afternoon with a mix of sun and clouds, but rain and a few thunderstorms have moved into Southwest Alabama, where a severe thunderstorm watch is in effect until 9p CT.

A few storms across Southwest Alabama this evening could produce strong wind gusts and some hail; we do not expect tornadoes. Some rain will likely develop North Alabama late tonight ahead of a push of cooler moving into the Deep South.

Tomorrow will be generally dry; the exception is Southwest Alabama where showers remain possible. The day will be cooler… highs drop into the 70s statewide. Most of the day Friday will be dry… highs will be only in the upper 60s over the northern third of the state.

FRIDAY NIGHT AND THE WEEKEND: A wave will form along a surface front near the Gulf Coast, and a large area of rain will move through Alabama Friday night into early Saturday morning. Some thunder is possible along the coast, but for most of Alabama the air will be cool and stable while the rain falls. The latest guidance suggests the rain will be over by mid-morning for much of Alabama, with some clearing possible by Saturday afternoon. Expect a high in the 65-72 degree range.

Sunday will be mostly sunny with a high in the 70s.

NEXT WEEK: Monday and Tuesday will be dry with a warming trend. New data suggests rain and thunderstorms will return late Wednesday and Wednesday night… See the video briefing for maps, graphics, and more details.
