Afternoon Storms Few And Far Between So Far
RADAR CHECK: You can almost count the number of showers and thunderstorms over the northern half of the state on one hand this afternoon; most of the action on radar is over the southern quarter of the state. Like recent days, showers are moving little, and away from them the sky is partly sunny with temperatures generally between 91 and 95 degrees. Continue reading
Hot/Muggy Weather Continues; A Few Pop-Up Storms
SUMMERTIME WEATHER: It is a familiar forecast for Alabama today, and each day for the rest of the week. An upper ridge covers the southern U.S.. and the primary band of westerly winds aloft (the jet stream) is well to the north, not far from the Canadian border. This leaves us in a pattern of hot humid days with the risk of showers and thunderstorms during the peak of the daytime heating process. They form in random, scattered places, and there is no way of knowing in advance exactly when and where they pop up. And, they are most likely between 1:00 and 9:00 p.m. Continue reading
Sun, Heat, Scattered Storms
RADAR CHECK: We have the usual array of random, scattered showers and thunderstorms across Alabama this afternoon. With light winds aloft, they are moving very little, and most all of them will fade pretty quickly once the sun goes down later this evening. Continue reading
Hit And Miss Storms Again This Afternoon
CLASSIC SUMMER PATTERN CONTINUES THIS WEEK: This is a new day, but we have an old forecast to deliver. We start the day with a mostly sunny sky this morning, but during the afternoon and evening hours, random, scattered showers and thunderstorms will form in the moist, unstable airmass. Most of them will come from 1:00 until 9:00 p.m… and odds of any one spot getting wet are around 30 percent. The high will be in 89-92 degree range for most communities. Continue reading
Scattered Storms Fire Up Again Later Today
SUN, HEAT, STORMS: Alabama will be in a routine summer weather for the foreseeable future. The main westerly winds aloft over North America are well to the north, but the daytime heating process makes the air over Alabama unstable, and once again we will deal with random, scattered showers and thunderstorms this afternoon and tonight. SPC has introduced a “marginal risk” (level 1/5) for areas north and west of a line from Linden to Calera to Scottsboro. Continue reading
Strong Storms Over Northeast Alabama
RADAR CHECK: A cluster of strong thunderstorms is parked over Northeast Alabama this afternoon. Heavy rain is falling over parts of Etowah, DeKalb, Cherokee, Calhoun, Cleburne, and Randolph counties… the storms are drifting slowly to the south. Some small hail … Continue reading
Hot, Humid, A Few Scattered Storms
MUGGY SUMMER DAYS: In the moist air over Alabama we have showers on radar at daybreak over parts of North and Central Alabama… they are moving eastward, and won’t last long. More scattered showers or storms could form this afternoon and this evening; odds of any one spot getting wet will be about one in four. Otherwise, expect a mix of sun and clouds today with a high close to 90. Continue reading
Classic Summer Weather Ahead
No rain over most of Alabama this afternoon… about the only showers on radar are over northern Baldwin County at mid-afternoon, northeast of Mobile. Continue reading
Midday Nowcast: Mainly Dry and Getting Hot
Our Tuesday is fairly typical of what you expect for summer in Alabama as temperatures late this morning are in the 80s for the most part Continue reading
Afternoon Storms Mainly Over South Alabama Today
HOT, MUGGY DAY AHEAD: Look for a high around 90 degrees this afternoon with a partly sunny sky; any shower later today over the northern half of the state should be pretty isolated. Scattered afternoon thunderstorms are a bit more likely over the southern half of the state; SPC has a “marginal risk” (level 1/5) defined for areas south of a line from near Eutaw to Fort Deposit to Abbeville.
