Slow Warming Trend Begins Later Today
We finally climb above freezing today; most North/Central Alabama locations will see a high around 40 degrees. Still, about 15 degrees below average for mid-January, but certainly moving in the right direction. The air is dry and the sky will stay sunny. Continue reading
Another Frigid Night; Warmer Days Ahead
SUB-FREEZING AFTERNOON: Temperatures are mostly in the 20s across Alabama this afternoon; the average high for Birmingham on January 17 is 54. At least the sun is shining brightly as dry air has moved into our state after a messy 24 hour period of snow and ice. Visible satellite imagery shows the snow cover nicely. Continue reading
Sunshine Returns, But Below Freezing Today
The winter weather advisory for Southeast Alabama will be cancelled soon as the snow ends and the sky clears. Today will be sunny but cold, most of North/Central Alabama will remain below freezing all day, and a brisk northwest wind of 10-20 mph will make it feel colder. Hopefully the sun, wind, and dry air will help with the sublimation/evaporation process, but some secondary roads will probably stay icy through tonight, especially where heavier snow came down yesterday and last night. Continue reading
Frigid Weekend; Snow Possible Next Tuesday
COLD/LIGHT SNOW: As advertised, cold, Arctic air has returned to Alabama, and radar shows some light snow continuing over the northern half of the state. We have reports of flurries as far south as Livingston and Demopolis. A winter weather advisory continues for the far northern part of Alabama, up in the Tennessee Valley, where icy travel is possible tonight. The counties in the advisory are Franklin, Colbert, Lauderdale, Lawrence, Limestone, Madison, and Jackson… Continue reading
Back Into The Deep Freeze
TEMPERATURES ARE PLUNGING: As I write this update around 6:30 this morning, the Arctic front is near I-65… to the west temperatures have dropped into the 30s with a strong northwest wind, but East Alabama is mostly in the low 60s. Rain showers continue in many places; they will end later this morning. Continue reading
Rain Returns To Alabama Monday
ANOTHER VERY COLD NIGHT AHEAD: With a clear sky and light wind, temperatures will drop into the 15-20 degree range across much of North/Central Alabama early tomorrow; this should be our last morning with lows in the teens for at least the next ten days. Continue reading

Hard Freeze Ahead Tonight
DRY, COLD WEATHER: Despite sunshine in full supply, temperatures are far below the average high of 53 degrees for January 4. We are seeing mostly 20s over the northern quarter of the state, with low to mid 30s for places like Birmingham, Tuscaloosa, Anniston, and Gadsden. A hard freeze is likely tonight; both the NAM and the GFS models are printing a low of 14 for Birmingham early tomorrow; colder spots could be closer to 10. Continue reading
Very Cold/Dry Weather Continues
FRIGID AIR: Yet another surge of Arctic air is invading Alabama this morning; temperatures are in the 15-25 degree range this morning, and wind chill indices are between 5 and 15. The sky is clear, and today will be sunny but cold with a high between 33 and 36 degree for most North/Central Alabama communities. Those over the northern third of the state will remain below freezing throughout the day. Continue reading
New Shot Of Cold Air Arrives Tonight
FEELING A LITTLE BETTER THIS AFTERNOON: Temperatures are up around 40 degrees across North/Central Alabama this afternoon with a good supply of sunshine; sure feels much better than recent sub-freezing days. While we enjoy a decent afternoon, a rapidly deepening surface low off the U.S. East Coast is bringing in big snows for cities like Savannah and Charleston; this will be a top five snowstorm for these cities. Continue reading
