Sun/Scattered Showers And Storms For The Weekend
RADAR CHECK: Several bands of showers and thunderstorms are across Alabama this afternoon, southeast of the circulation of former Hurricane Laura, which is turning eastward through Tennessee and Kentucky. So far there have been no tornadoes in Alabama, but the risk of brief, isolated “spin up” tornadoes will continue through the evening hours, especially over the northwest part of the state. Be weather aware, and pay attention to warnings if any are needed. Continue reading
Isolated Tornadoes Possible This Afternoon Over Northwest Alabama
ACTIVE DAY: The remnant circulation of former Hurricane Laura will turn eastward today, passing north of Alabama. We have a very moist, tropical air mass in place this morning, and as the air heats and becomes more unstable this afternoon there is a chance of a few stronger storms in the spiral bands wrapping into the circulation to the north. With fairly high SRH (Storm Relative Helicity) values, a few storms might show some rotation, and there is the risk of a few isolated, brief tornadoes. Continue reading
A Few Isolated Tornadoes Are Possible Tomorrow Over North Alabama
RADAR CHECK: A fast-moving band of thunderstorms has been moving through West Alabama this afternoon producing gusty winds and some small hail; this is one of the outer feeder bands associated with Tropical Storm Laura, which is now over Arkansas. Other scattered showers and thunderstorms are over East Alabama; otherwise, the sky is partly sunny with temperatures mostly in the upper 80s and low 90s. Continue reading
Midday Update: Laura Weakening, Storms Developing
HOT & HUMID THURSDAY: A very tropical air mass remains in place across the state, allowing for a partly sunny sky, and we are watching the radar as scattered showers and thunderstorms are developing and will continue to do so … Continue reading
Severe Storms Possible Over North Alabama Tomorrow
QUIET MORNING: While Hurricane Laura is moving northward well to the west of Alabama, our weather is quiet this morning. A decent part of the day will be dry with a partly sunny sky, but we do expect a few scattered showers and thunderstorms by mid to late afternoon into tonight. But the direct wind and rain associated with Laura will remain well to the west of Alabama. Today will be hot and humid with a high between 89 and 93 degrees for most communities. Continue reading
Laura Makes Landfall Tonight; Rain Increasing Over Alabama Friday
QUIET AFTERNOON: As expected, showers are very isolated across Alabama today. The sky is partly sunny, and temperatures are mostly in the upper 80s and low 90s. We do note a big flooding event unfolded this morning over Northwest Alabama; parts of Franklin County had over 6 inches of rain, and a flash flood emergency was issued by NWS Huntsville for a while. That large rain mass diminished and drifted into Tennessee later in the morning. Continue reading
Dangerous Laura Headed For The Northwest Gulf Coast
RADAR CHECK: We have a batch of rain and thunderstorms over Northwest Alabama early this morning, but a decent part of this day should be dry across the state with only widely scattered showers or storms this afternoon. The sky will be partly sunny, and the high will be in the upper 80s for most communities. Not much change tomorrow; the main impact from Laura (in terms of wind and rain) will remain well to the west; we will have a mix of sun and clouds with a few widely scattered showers or thunderstorms by mid to late afternoon. Continue reading
Drier Tomorrow; Tropical Rain Returns Later This Week
RADAR CHECK: Rain has been fairly widespread over the northern half of the state today; a flash flood warning was required for a while for Sumter County in West Alabama. With a cloudy sky, temperatures are mostly in the 70s over the northern and central counties. But, South Alabama is seeing a pretty good supply of sunshine with temperatures in the 85-90 degree range. The rain today is partly in associated with the remnants of former Tropical Storm Marco, although the core circulation is far to the west off the Louisiana coast. Rain tapers off tonight. Continue reading
Periods Of Rain Today; Eyes On Laura
WET DAY: Rain is fairly widespread over the southern 2/3 of Alabama this morning, and that rain area continues to move northward. Today will be cloudy with periods of rain; many places will hold in the 70s most of the day with very little sun. Continue reading
Marco Fizzles; Eyes Are Now On Laura
RADAR CHECK: Rain is relatively widespread across Alabama this afternoon south of a line from Auburn to Greenville to Mobile; this is the rain shield associated with Marco, a dissipating tropical system in the far northern Gulf of Mexico. The rain and thunderstorms are well removed from the center due to strong shear. The sky is partly to mostly cloudy over the northern half of the state with just a few scattered showers. Continue reading
