Humid Summer Days; Scattered Afternoon/Evening Storms
CLASSIC SUMMER PATTERN: If you are new to Alabama, this kind of weather is just what we expect in summer. Partly sunny, very humid days with random, scattered showers and storms around during the afternoon and evening hours. This is our forecast for the rest of the week; highs will be in the 86-90 degree range for most places, right at seasonal averages. Concerning the afternoon storms, there is no way of knowing in advance exactly when and where they pop up… you just have to watch radar trends if you have an outdoor event planned. Continue reading
Scattered Showers/Storms Forming This Afternoon
RADAR CHECK: As expected, a number of scattered showers and thunderstorms are developing over Central Alabama this afternoon; most of them are south of I-59, the approximate location of a stalled surface front. Like yesterday, stronger storms will be capable of producing heavy rain, gusty winds, small hail, and lots of lightning. Away from the storms, we have a mix of sun and clouds with temperatures in the mid to upper 80s over most of the state. Continue reading
Summer Mix Of Sun And Scattered Storms
SUN AND STORMS: A weak surface front is stalled across Alabama this morning, not too early from I-20. This means most of the showers and storms today, like yesterday, will be over the southern 2/3 of the state, but an isolated shower can’t be ruled out over North Alabama as well this afternoon. Odds of any one spot getting wet today are 35-45 percent along and south of I-20, and 15-25 percent north of I-20 Continue reading
Scattered Storms Daily This Week; Highs Mostly In The Upper 80s
RADAR CHECK: A number of summer soakers are in progress across Alabama this afternoon… heaviest rain is generally south of I-20. Understand it isn’t raining everywhere… that is just the way it works here this time of the year. Summer thunderstorms are random and scattered, but the stronger storms this afternoon are producing torrential rain, strong gusty winds, small hail, and lots of lightning. Continue reading
Heat Levels Down; Rain Chances Up This Week
NOT AS HOT: The core of the upper high that has been responsible for above average temperatures across the Deep South over the past week is shifting west, meaning lower heat levels this week, and a better coverage of afternoon and evening showers and thunderstorms. Humidity values will be high each day, but afternoon highs this week will be mostly in the 85-89 degree range, a good ten degrees lower than those we experienced last week. Continue reading
Scattered Strong/Severe Storms Form Later Today; Still Hot
SCATTERED STORMS LATER TODAY: The sky is mostly fair across Alabama early this morning with temperatures in the 70s; we rise into the 90s again today with a partly sunny sky. During the heat of the day, random, scattered storms will likely form over the southern 2/3 of the state, and those could pack a punch. SPC maintains a “slight risk” (level 2/5) of severe thunderstorms today mainly for areas south of I-59. Continue reading
Occasional Summer Downpours Through Tonight; Drier/Hotter Next Week
RADAR CHECK: More strong summer storms have fired up in the ocean of humidity that covers Alabama and the Deep South this afternoon. Parts of the Birmingham metro are receiving heavy rain again, but these storms are moving along at a decent pace, and rain won’t be as heavy or prolonged as what we experienced early this morning. Continue reading
Very Humid With Occasional Summer Soakers
RADAR CHECK A large batch of rain and storms (a Mesoscale Convective System, or MCS) has been moving through Alabama early this morning with gusty winds, heavy rain, and lots of lightning. Flash flood warnings are in effect at sunrise for parts of Jefferson, Shelby, Cullman, Winston, and Walker counties. Some communities have picked up over three inches of rain over the past 6 hours with this batch of storms. Continue reading
Sun, Heat, Scattered Storms
RADAR CHECK: As expected, we have scattered, random showers and thunderstorms across Alabama this afternoon. Stronger storms are producing heavy rain, gusty winds, and lots of lightning. Otherwise, we have a mix of sun and clouds this afternoon with temperatures mostly in the 84-89 degree range. Scattered storms will fade after the sun sets this evening. Continue reading
Scattered Strong Storms Later Today; Cooler Tomorrow
FRONT ON THE WAY: A surface front will bring scattered showers and thunderstorms to the northern half of Alabama later today and tonight. It won’t rain everywhere, but where storms do form they could pack a punch. SPC continues a “marginal risk” (level 1/5) of severe thunderstorms for that part of Alabama north of a line from Grove Hill to Prattville to Roanoke. Continue reading
