Left BHM at 5:10 am CDT. Jennifer and I had breakfast at the IHOP in Knoxville, TN around 9:30 am EDT, with Dr. Carmen Nappo, atmospheric scientist from Oak Ridge National Lab, gravity wave expert, and author of one of my main reference books. Carmen and I have been callobarating via phone and email this Summer on an article about an intense atmospheric bore and waves in Iowa in May, captured in time lapse by a webcam. Some of the best gravity wave pictures I’ve seen. Go to
youtube and type “gravity wave”, and it should be first.

Dr. Nappo and his wife were very cordial, and IHOP hit the spot. Carmen signed my book for me, of course!

Went through Knoxville and Bristol, now stopped in SW Virginia (Pulaski), just past I-77, the road to Mt. Airy, NC, hometown of Andy Griffith and the town on which Mayberry was based.

285 miles to the Potomac River crossing into Washington DC! Roanoke, Harrisonburg, and Shenadoah National Park coming up.

Another blog tomorrow night with pictures from Washington, including hopefully some pictures from inside NCEP.
