WAITING FOR STORMS: After a round of morning showers and thunderstorms, low clouds have lingered across much of North and Central Alabama, keeping the air somewhat stable and inhibiting new thunderstorm formation. Birmingham reports only 84 degrees at 3:00… with similar temperatures in other communities around here.

Quite frankly, the RPM and the RAP models did a pretty good job showing the lack of convection around here this afternoon… probably should have paid more attention to them this morning. As I often say, we have a serious lack of skill in forecasting summer convection across the Deep South.

However, SPC maintains a “slight risk” of severe weather for almost all of Central Alabama through tonight, as they expect new storms to form soon. The storms could produce small hail, gusty winds, and lots of lighting. But, the overall severe weather is smaller due to the lack of serious summer instability. Could very well be that nothing develops at all.

THE WEEKEND: The air aloft is expected to be warmer, and the pattern gets back to a more typical summer situation. Partly sunny days with the risk of widely scattered showers and storms during the afternoon and highs in the low 90s.

NEXT WEEK: Heat levels rise a bit… with mid 90s possible much of the week as the upper high noses in here from the west. There will be enough moisture and instability very day for the risk of a few widely scattered storms, but pretty much no doubt next week won’t be as wet as this week has been across our state. See the Weather Xtreme video for details.

GULF COAST WEATHER: Showers and storms will become fewer in number tomorrow and Sunday with about 6 to 8 hours of sun each day over the weekend. Highs today will be in the mid 80s, followed by upper 80s tomorrow and Sunday. The sea water temperature is running generally in the mid 80s.

WEATHER BRAINS: Don’t forget you can listen to our weekly 90 minute netcast anytime on the web, or on iTunes. This is the show all about weather featuring many familiar voices, including our meteorologists here at ABC 33/40.

I had a great time in Tuscaloosa this morning at the grand opening of Big Lots… this is one of the larger stores that was destroyed by the April 27, 2011 tornado. Good to see many new and old friends there. Brian Peters will have the video updates tomorrow and Sunday… my next Weather Xtreme video will be posted bright and early Monday morning by 7:00. Enjoy the weekend!
