COLD NOVEMBER MORNING: Our Skywatcher in Broomtown, up in Cherokee County near the Georgia border in Northeast Alabama, just checked in with 19 degrees early this morning, and that most likely will be the coldest observation in the state. Other temperatures include 22 at Black Creek (northeast of Gadsden in Etowah County), 25 at Haleyville, 26 at Coker and Fayette, and 29 at Bessemer and Gardendale. The Birmingham Airport was sitting at 32 degrees at 5:00.
Today will be sunny and cool, with a high somewhere between 57 and 61 degrees.
OUR WEEKEND: We warm into the mid 60s tomorrow, followed by low 70s Sunday. Low level moisture will begin to increase Sunday, and we will probably need to mention a small risk of an afternoon shower, mainly over Northwest Alabama.
FOOTBALL WEATHER: It will be cold for tonight’s high school football playoff games. The sky will be clear, with temperatures falling from the upper 40s at kickoff to near 40 by the final whistle.
Tomorrow, Alabama hosts Georgia Southern at 1:00 at Bryant-Denny Stadium. The sky will be partly to mostly sunny, with a kickoff temperature near 63 degrees, falling into the upper 50s by the fourth quarter. Auburn hosts Samford at Jordan-Hare Stadium (12:00 CST kickoff); the weather will be delightful for homecoming with a sunny sky with temperatures hovering in the low to mid 60s for the entire game.
NEXT WEEK: Model agreement is pretty good concerning Thanksgiving week. We rise into the mid 70s Monday and Tuesday with just a few isolated showers both days. Then, expect the best coverage of showers and a few thunderstorms Tuesday night, ending early Wednesday morning thanks to a passing cold front. The chance of any severe weather with this feature looks small for now.
The sky should clear by Wednesday afternoon as cooler and drier air arrives, and Thanksgiving Day looks excellent, with a sunny sky. The low early Thursday morning should be in the 30s, followed by low 60s that afternoon. A picture perfect fall day for a turkey feast.
The weather stays dry on Black Friday, but there is still concern over a powerful storm system that could impact Alabama the following weekend (November 26-27). The latest GFS and ECMWF runs have backed off on the strength of the system… see the Weather Xtreme video for details. Just too early to be specific, but something to keep an eye on.
