MOIST PATTERN CONTINUES: While I know the showers and storms in recent days has been an inconvenience for some, most welcome the summer rain as we have cut into rain deficiencies across the state. Heat levels have been dropping due to the clouds and showers, and today many places won’t reach 90 degrees. Not bad for mid-summer in Alabama during the dog days.

The radar is quiet as I write this around 5:30 this morning, but we had a remarkable flash flood event last night over East Alabama. Parts of St. Clair, Etowah, Cherokee, and Calhoun counties had over 4 inches of rain with a number of serious flooding issues at one point.

TODAY THROUGH THE WEEKEND: Not much change is expected today and tomorrow, with cloudy periods and scattered to numerous showers and thunderstorms. The stronger storms will produce very heavy amounts of rain, vivid and frequent lightning, and gusty winds. While most of the showers and storms will come during the afternoon and evening hours, we can’t rule out late night or morning rain as well in spots. The high today and tomorrow will be in the 87-90 degree range for most places.

Sunday the upper ridge begins to strengthen, and showers and storms should begin to thin out a bit with highs rising into the low 90s.

NEXT WEEK: The upper ridge will nose into Alabama from the northwest, meaning rising heat levels and fewer showers and storms. Highs should be in the mid 90s by mid-week with only widely scattered afternoon and evening showers and thunderstorms.

AT THE BEACH: Expect about 3-5 hours of sunshine today and tomorrow with scattered to numerous showers and thunderstorms. Then, 6-8 hours of sunshine a day can be expected Sunday and Monday with showers and storms becoming more isolated. Sea water temperatures remain in the mid to upper 80s.

IN THE TROPICS: A tropical wave is moving into Central America this morning with no organization. Another wave is in the Central Atlantic, about midday between the Lesser Antilles and the coast of Africa, and a third is in the far eastern Atlantic. For now there is no development and tropical storm formation is not expected through the weekend.
