Rain moved into Central Alabama overnight, but radar this morning shows the northwest corner of Alabama drying out. Rain will occur for much of Central Alabama this morning, but the bulk of the rain should be moving out of the area by noontime. Clouds will stick around, though, so some patchy light rain or drizzle will be possible this afternoon. We should see highs in the mid and upper 50s.
Cold air arrives Sunday with morning lows near freezing and afternoon highs only reaching the middle 40s with good cold air advection. You’ll need to bundle up if you are headed outdoors for any period of time.
Look for a chilly start to the work week as the morning lows dip back into the 20s Monday morning. But with full sun we should see highs climb into the 50s on Monday.
The rest of the week looks dry with temperatures moderating close to seasonal averages with highs in the upper 50s and lows in the 30s. Surface high pressure migrates across the Southeast US for the latter part of the week, and this will return moisture into the lower Mississippi River Valley next Saturday as a strong low latitude trough comes out of the Southwest US. Timing on this feature has varied from model run to model run, so timing of our next chance at rain may have to be adjusted as the models become better focused on the solution.
Rainfall amounts today will be around half an inch for most spots but less in West Central Alabama where the rain is ending this morning.
Christmas for Central Alabama looks dry for now with high temperatures mainly in the 50s. The overall upper air pattern remains somewhat zonal as we head into the latter part of December and the end of 2013!

I had a great time visiting my daughter in Chicago this past week. I arrived with a 2 to 4 inch snow and it was cold the whole time. Ohare Airport reported a low of -3 last Wednesday, coldest weather I’ve seen in quite some time. Sure nice to be back in the warmer climes!! I expect to have the next Weather Xtreme Video posted first thing on Sunday morning. Enjoy the day and Godspeed.
