THIS MORNING: The sky is clear, and temperatures are generally in the 20s. I have heard of no travel issues, and we really don’t expect any widespread problems. Just be aware that any standing water left over from last night will be ice.
TODAY AND THE WEEKEND: The sky will be mostly sunny today, and most places won’t make it out of the 30s with a chilly north wind. A strong disturbance will bring some clouds in here tonight and tomorrow, but the air near the surface is so dry that we don’t expect any precipitation. With the incoming clouds, it now looks like just about everybody will be in the 20 to 25 degree range early tomorrow morning.
The sky should become partly sunny tomorrow afternoon with a high in the mid 40s. Sunday will be dry with a partly to mostly sunny sky and a high in the low 50s as the warming trend continues.
NEXT WEEK: Yet another close call with winter weather issues. Be sure and watch the Weather Xtreme video for all of the graphics.
Light rain will break out across the state Monday. If it begins early enough, there might be a little sleet involved, but now we are going to just mention periods of light rain during the day Monday.
SNOW MONDAY NIGHT INTO TUESDAY? Things get interesting as a surface low cranks up to the south. All of the global models agree on this scenario, but as usual they differ in details. Placement of this low and other features will be the determining factor if we see some snow around here.
We will take a blend of the GFS and the ECMWF, and go ahead and mention a chance of rain changing to snow late Monday night into Tuesday morning, mainly for areas east of I-65, and north of I-20. Way too early to talk about accumulation potential. A little displacement of the low to the east would put all of the snow over North Georgia with hardly any for Alabama. And, we should note that there is some risk of significant snow over Northeast Alabama should there be sufficient depth of cold air and dynamic lift.
We should be able to nail down the details in a more reliable manner over the weekend on this, so stay tuned. But, it looks like a situation where there could be significant snow over parts of North and East Alabama, or nothing at all.
Precipitation will wind down by midday Tuesday as the big low deepens rapidly and moves up the Atlantic coast.
WEDNESDAY-FRIDAY: The weather looks mostly dry on these days, but another cold air blast arrives by Friday with some hint of snow flurries. We are just having a very hard time warming up this winter.
VOODOO LAND: Snow fans note the GFS is still suggest potential for a major winter storm in the Feb 2-3 time frame, just in time for Ground Hog’s Day, but this is nothing but voodoo for now. See the Weather Xtreme video for details. And, no sign of any significant warm-up for the next 7-15 days as temperatures remain below average thanks to the mean eastern U.S. upper trough.
