Very strong thunderstorms are still in progress over NE Alabama, mainly in St. Clair and Etowah Counties.

NWS/Birmingham issued a Special Weather Statement (Significant Weather Alert) for those two counties until 2:00.

It was based on several thunderstorms near Ashville and 12 miles NE of Springville moving NE rather slowly at about 9 mph.

A Significant Weather Alert falls short of a Severe Thunderstorm Warning, but the NWS advises it could intensify quickly to trigger a warning.

As it stands now, pea-size hail and wind gusts up to about 40 expected with these storms as they move toward Whitney Junction, Altoona and Steele.

Elsewhere around Alabama, scattered showers and storms were in progress from Marengo, Monroe and Clarke Counties southward. Everything was moving generally northeastward.

At 1:25, there were few, if any, showers on a line from Scottsboro to Oneonta, Birmingham, Tuscaloosa and Eutaw westward.
