This is a quick “waiting on the coffee” sample of the bitter Alabama cold this morning. Be sure and scroll just below this one to see Tim’s explanation of the Super Highway where our bitter cold is coming from.
Some quick 4 am reports:
15 in Haleyville, with a dew point of 1 and a wind chill of 2 above
17 Muscle Shoals, dew point 1 below zero, wind chill 5, north wind gusts 20
23 Tuscaloosa, wind chill 12
20 Birmingham, wind chill 10 (we will easily reach the 19 originally forecast)
19 Gadsden, wind chill 11
21 Anniston
29 Mobile, wind north, gusts 25, wind chill 17
16 Springville (Simmons Mountain), dew point 3, wind 13 mph, wind chill 10 (from 33/40 Skywatcher)
In Birmingham and other Central Alabama points, this morning’s cold represents a plunge in temperature of over 50 degrees from the end-of-the-week warmth!
The vast snow field, or snow pack, now covers all of Canada and Alaska and down into the “Lower 48” to include the northern two thirds of Arizona and New Mexico across to all of Nebraska, Missouri, Illinois, Indiana and into the Northeast USA. Brisk north winds coming off that snow pack can bring some interesting temperatures.
* As cold as 44 below zero in NW Canada again this morning.
James will be along soon after 6 with an interesting video discussion. Will be interesting also to see 33/40 Skywatcher reports and how “unwarm” it is atop Mt. Leconte in the Great Smoky Mountain National Park. Hope all of your pets are in a warm place.
This will be an “8-cup” coffee day…
