A neighbor on my street and I learned to do a rain dance during our long drought. I did mine under cover of darkness. Now we need to learn a semi-drought dance. I will check with her.

This morning, I did some highly unscientific weather research, 4th grade level. This is what I found, and it is entirely based on official rain amounts at Birmingham Airport so far this year,

As of yesterday, I was delighted to realize that I had lived healthy and happy through 280 days of 2009.

* We have received measurable rain on 113 days out of 280, which means it rains on an average of approximately every 2-1/2 days. This does not count trace amounts–only measurable amounts.

* As of this morning, we have received 54.50 inches this year–an excess of 12.08 inches. If it does not rain another drip by the time you go to your New Year’s Eve Party, we will still end the year with about a 1/2 inch surplus.

* 10.69 inches made September our wettest month so far. Measurable rain came on 17 days including 11 days in a row.

* Our wettest one-day total so far was 3.15 inches on one day in July. July produced 7.62 inches of rain making it our wettest month so far. Both July and August had 14 days each with measurable rain.

* The month of September had measurable rain on 17 days, including 11 days in a row.

* Our smallest monthly total so far this year was 2.12 inches in April, but we got measurable rain on 8 days.

* May had the most number of wet days with measurable rain on 19 days.

* Already we have received 2.15 inches of rain so far in October occurring on 5 days. If you will look at our latest forecast, that will undoubtedly reach greater heights.

BIRMINGHAM’S WETTEST YEARS
We had a gentleman asking yesterday in the comment section of the BLOG about how does 2009 compare with our record wet years. The answer is no competition so far with 1929 and early in the 1960s. We had 81.82 inches of rain in the calendar year 1929. The most we have ever had in a 12-month period, was 83.63 from February 1961 through January 1962.

EVERGREEN
Back in the 1970s, Evergreen received well over 100 inches of rain in a 12-month period. I will do a special story about that later.

That is all. I am way behind on my coffee drinking and I have an 11 am three-inning ball game scheduled with my little dog. It will not be on ESPN or Metube.
