At 2 am CDT, Gadsden was at 48 degrees. This is one of the coolest temperatures east of the Mississippi River in the U. S. tonight. To find other temperatures this cool, you have to go as far north as NW Pennsylvania, central Michigan, and Wisconsin.
Interesting how the combination of dry air in place, a lack of wind, and terrain can play such a role. A very strong inversion is keeping air from mixing down to the surface, but winds are around 20 mph just 1,000 feet off the surface, and if some of that wind mixes down, temps will rise 5 or 10 degrees quickly. Lows tonight could have a 25 degree spread over Alabama.
