Jason Simpson alerted me to the possibility of a gravity wave in an email, and after doing some quick analysis, it looks like there is one over Mississippi. Rapidly descending air in the trough of the wave warms the lower levels of the atmosphere, causing the air to be less dense. This lowers the pressure at the surface quickly, and the wind responds by adjusting into the trough. The sinking, warming air dries up the rain very sharply at the back edge of the rain area.
Wind gusts this morning:
Vicksburg 41 mph
Natchez 40 mph
Jackson 36 mph
It looks like the wave is stronger over south MS now, so the main threat of any high wind looks to be over southwest Alabama, but keep an eye on it.
