This is one of those interesting situations with a variety of weather for Central Alabama over the next couple of days. But a lot of attention is focused on the weather today with the big game in Tuscaloosa. As it stands now, a surface front was situated from about Meridian, MS, to Auburn, AL. While a surface low did develop on the front overnight, it would appear that the front is not going to come northward. And radar confirms that the heaviest rain is occurring south of a line along Interstate 20. With clouds staying put, we can’t rule out a little light rain for the game, but it sure looks like there won’t be any heavy downpours. Game time temperatures will be in the upper 50s perhaps nudging as highs as 61 or so. I’ll stick with making weather predictions and not delving into prognosticating a winner in the game.

Colder air arrives Sunday night and Monday. That along with the trough taking a slow trek across the Southeast keeps us in a moist air mass with the possibility of more rain on Sunday changing over to a rain snow mixture Sunday night and Monday. I expect Monday to be a raw day with the potential for periods of rain and snow mixed, a brisk, cold west to northwest wind, and the highs and lows for the day all mixed up – the high coming probably shortly after midnight and the low coming just before midnight. Look for little change in temperature during the day or even falling with readings around 40. With colder air aloft, the area from Birmingham northward should see snow flurries, but I do not expect any accumulation. We’ll have to watch for snow showers which could produce short bursts of snow that might dust grassy, colder spots.

The weather improves Tuesday but stays fairly chilly. The fast moving flow brings another upper disturbance to the area late Wednesday with another chance for rain. I think we’ll moderate temperature-wise by Wednesday, but we’ll still be below seasonally expected values with highs in the upper 50s.

We dry out again Thursday and Friday before yet another system brings some rain chances to the area on Saturday. So all in all a fairly active period of weather with no terrible extremes.

Venturing into voodoo country, the GFS is suggesting a slight retreat of the main storm track along with a slow down of those fast moving disturbances. But it does keep the long wave trough position over the eastern half of the US, so we’re likely to stay below normal values through much of the next two weeks.
