The drizzly, cloudy, cool weather continues for another day as we experience some light patchy rain off and on today. But colder air is coming into the state as a trough digs just to our west bringing some chilly air into the region. And with it the possibility of snow flurries or perhaps snow showers as the atmosphere gets cold. Ground and near surface temperatures, however, will remain above the freezing mark, so I do not expect any serious winter weather issues for North and Central Alabama.

Severe weather is a possibility for the Florida Peninsula and a small chunk of South Georgia today where the bulk of the heaviest rain should also occur.

Today, temperatures will hold steady in the lower and middle 50s, but Monday will see one of those days where the temperature falls for much of the day. The high for the day should occur in the early morning hours and the low for the day will come later Monday evening. Look for daytime temperatures Monday to hover in the lower 40s. And the brisk west to northwest wind won’t help except to make it feel colder. The moisture gradually exits the area late Monday paving the way for an improvement in the weather on Tuesday.

With the long wave trough position over the eastern half of the country, we should stay below seasonal values for at least the next week.

Wednesday should be a dry day and the warmest day of the upcoming week with a high nipping at 60 or so. But a fast moving disturbance in the upper flow promises some clouds and rain for Central Alabama very late Wednesday evening and for the first half of Thursday. The rain should be moving out by Thursday afternoon with temperatures remaining chilly with

And that paves the way for a cool but dry Friday and weekend before the next storm system brings rain chances back into the picture for the start of the next week on Monday, December 8th.

Tropics remain quiet as the 2008 hurricane season, one that has been pretty active, comes to a close.

The long range GFS projections are hinting at a change in the overall pattern with the gradual development of a closed low over the Western US. This would bring Alabama and the Southeast into a wet and mild pattern with a strong southwesterly flow aloft. While we can’t bank on this coming true, a period of wet and warmer weather would certainly be welcome.
