It seems like we’ve been in a cold pattern for months and months, probably more like weeks, but it looks like a pattern shift may be underway which will return Central Alabama and the Southeast to more milder weather conditions.
Today we’ll see some clouds arcing across the sky as the surface high centered over Cullman this morning moves eastward which a weak ridge establishes itself over the Southeast. This means we should see afternoon highs reach the upper 50s after a very brisk and chilly start with good frost.
Sunday the high shifts far enough east to bring moisture back to the area, but I think we’ll remain dry with a cloud cover for most locations. Monday and for much of the rest of the week we will remain in a moist air mass which means a chance of showers just about every day. I’m not talking all day rains – showery conditions and scattered at that.
With a ridge well established across the Gulf of Mexico, the pattern will keep the main storm track as well as approaching fronts to our northwest and north. But because of the moist air mass, showers will be a daily possibility much of the week. Not enough skill to indicate which days could be drier. But it does appear the better chances for rain may come Monday night and Tuesday night.
The moist pattern and the ridge aloft with a strong southwesterly flow should keep temperatures above the averages for this time of year. In fact, we could see highs approach 70 Wednesday and Thursday with this pattern. And highs will be very mild with readings generally in the 45 to 55 range – with most days in the 50s. Those are values close to the daily average highs! Nice change.
Stepping out into voodoo country, it looks mild for Christmas and perhaps some rain chance. The pattern in the extended ranges does not change much with a near-zonal flow plus a weak ridge over the Gulf.

Quiet day today, but a busy one on Sunday with filling in for Ashley Brand on television and handling a couple of church program duties. Our Christmas choir program will be Sunday at 7 pm at Helena United Methodist Church where I will be helping out with the narration as our great choir brings the music of Christmas alive. I invite you to join us – the church is at 2035 Highway 58 in Helena.
I hope you have a wonderful weekend. Enjoy the moderating weather – and especially the dry weather this weekend. Godspeed.
