The old barometer built up to a very high 31.00 inches at Fairbanks today, or 1052 millibars.
Late today, it was a very high 1054 MB at Mayo in the Yukon of NW Canada. (Translation: A very strong high pressure system)

Meanwhile, the old thermometer bottomed out at 42 below zero at Chandalar Lake in NE Alaska.

This combination bothers me. I have always believed that when the temperature approached -50 and the pressure approached 1060 MB that the huge glob of bitter cold would break out and head toward my house.

Can’t prove it.

Sooner or later it has to move.

Blizzard conditions already raging tonight across Wyoming and Montana into the Pacific NW. All this will make big weather headlines in the coming days.

I would not want to be driving tonight on I-80 NW of Cheyenne and Laramie where it curves around the base of the Medicine Bow Mountains. Especially in the vicinity of Arlington, Wyoming. I believe the highway department installed wind sensors once along that stretch of I-80 so motorists could be advised.

Would not want to expose my beloved 96 Olds to conditions like that!
