The rain over night that brought rain to just about all of Central Alabama was moving out of the area this morning. Radar continued to show a discontinuous band of light rain from the Gadsden area across Birmingham to northwest of Demopolis. The rain was very light except near Demopolis and Gadsden. Rainfall amounts varied from about a tenth of an inch down toward Alexander City to near an inch from Columbus, MS, to Cullman. I recorded 4 tenths of an inch while the Birmingham airport showed 34 hundredths.

Clouds will be lingering for much of the day but some sunshine is possible this afternoon especially northwest of Birmingham. Temperatures should dip perhaps into the upper 40s but I think most areas will hold steady in the 50s for the day.

The front is forecast to stall out across South Alabama and will remain there. A weak impulse in the upper flow will help to nudge the front further south and east on Monday. That paves the way for dry weather until late Thursday and Friday. A slight reinforcing shot of cooler air Wednesday will dip temperatures a little but the atmosphere will be dry so nothing beyond a few clouds is expected.

And I don’t know about you, but I will be glad to see several days of sunny weather after all the cloudy days we’ve had.

Rain enters the picture again Friday with the next front coming into Central Alabama. This one seems destined to move through quickly opening the way for a dry weather and temperatures about as expected for the first weekend of 2009.

And you’ve just got to love the GFS. While I am not making a forecast for wintery weather, the long range GFS is now suggesting winter issues for the Southeast around the 8th/9th and again around the 12th. The NAO has been suggesting a change to much colder weather as it continues to project negative values, and the GFS shows a changing pattern with a cold upper trough over the eastern half of the country. I certainly buy the trend here, but the specifics for any winter weather will depend on the exact conditions which are often hard to establish even 24 hours in advance. So it is all voodoo for now, but fun to speculate on.

I will be filling in for Jason Monday and Tuesday, so I plan to post the Weather Xtreme Video by 9:30 or 10 am on those days. Good Morning Alabama from 5 to 7 am has too many hits for weather to get the Xtreme done until well after 7 am. I hope that you have a great Sunday. Godspeed.
