Happy New Year! 2009 is here! And it looks like it is shaping up to start relatively wet over the next week or so. But no wet today! Plenty of sun to start the day with some chilly temperatures as North and Central Alabama start generally in the 20s. We should see a nice warm up with a good supply of sun and afternoon temperatures in the 50s.

After today we go toward the wet department. Southerly flow should set up later tonight with the possibility of a little light precipitation – sprinkles perhaps – and increased clouds. Lows will be a bit warmer – about 12 to 15 degrees with lows close to 40.

A short wave coming out of the southwest will increase rain chances on Saturday. I think the day will start out dry but cloudy with the chances for rain increasing during the day. And those rain chances stick around on Sunday as the frontal boundary stalls across the Southeast. We’ll probably see a short break Sunday night into Monday before a new surface low forms in the Northwest Gulf and moves northeast to the Mid-Atlantic states. This will bring another round of rain to Central Alabama Monday. And like yesterday’s GFS run, this one keeps the intensities in check with the possibility of some thunder but severe weather does not look likely here. Some threat still exists but most likely over Georgia, Florida, and South Carolina. And part of the issue has to do with model differences, so confidence is not outstanding.

The trough digs over the eastern half of the country on Wednesday bringing a surge of much colder air back to the East and Southeast. As we verge into voodoo country, the GFS remained consistent with a potential winter weather situation setting up for Friday and Saturday, January 9 and 10. If the GFS is right, we could be dealing with a winter weather episode from the Southeast to New England. But let’s all say it together, “this is voodoo and speculation.” Just fun to watch!
