Of course it is not. But seems like it. Makes one think about Noah and the Ark.
At 3 o’clock on this Tuesday morning, rain was still coming down in good amounts across the north third of Alabama. Most of the rain was along and north of the Fayette-Jasper-Oneonta-Gadsden line. It was pouring over NE Alabama and rain was getting heavier again over Fayette and Walker County as a new batch of heavier rain moved in from Mississippi.
Many areas have received well over two inches of rain and we will hear of some totals later today exceeding 4 inches almost for sure.
Flash Flood Watches continue for much of North Alabama generally along and north of the busy, busy I-20 which includes the Tuscaloosa-Birmingham-Anniston area,
Here are some totals so far from the regular weather stations that report every hour. As of 2 am:
1.58 Birmingham Airport
0.45 Tuscaloosa
1.14 Shelby County Airport
0.62 Huntsville
0.60 Decatur
1.50 Gadsden Airport
1.16 Anniston Airport
1.72 Columbus AFB, Miss.
We can safely say that noone is starting 2009 with a rain deficit.
Quite a difference in temperature at 2 this morning. Look at this south to north profile:
69 Mobile
68 Montgomery
55 Birmingham
46 Cullman
33 Memphis
20s North Arkansas
Freezing rain will be increasing from Extreme NW Tennessee, Extreme North Kentucky, Southeast Missouri and the southern portions of Illinois and Indiana.
SEVERE THUNDERSTORMS
The Storm Prediction Center maintains a slight risk today (Tuesday) over most of Alabama except the NW and Extreme North. Birmingham is included. A round of stronger thunderstorms will have to be looked at later today.
No end in excitement to start the new year.
…and no surplus in sleep.
…sometimes I think that God did not intend for weather humans to get much sleep. That is why He provided us with coffee.
…we will be up early later this morning to provide additional updates.
…and probably a long list of rain amounts later this morning.
…one final note…Bill Murray, driving in the vicinity of Lake Purdy yesterday said the lake (one of the main sources of water for Birmingham) was full and that was one of the “purdiest sights” he had ever seen.
…outta here before I get in trouble!
