There’s a nice warm up ahead but we’ve got to get through a couple more shots of cold air and perhaps some snow flurries before the warm up. This morning a final rain band was moving through Central Alabama and I think most spots will be drying out by noon or so, and we could see some peeks at the sun during the afternoon. The front currently moving through Alabama will bring another cool down to the area after a rather brief recovery. I think most places will see 50 for highs today before the temperature starts falling again.
Monday should be a dry, cool day as we drop back to freezing for our lows and hit highs in the lower 40s. Clouds return overnight with the possibility for snow flurries Tuesday morning primarily. Tuesday promises to be a raw day with a solid north wind and temperatures struggling to reach the upper 30s.
But take heart, the warming trend begins on Wednesday so that by Thursday we could be pushing the 60-degree mark for highs. The upper air pattern will finally undergo a change as the long wave trough position shifts to our east taking the northwest flow and the cold air with it.
While the pattern flattens and we return to temperatures at or above where we ought to be in the latter part of January, a fast moving short wave promises clouds and excellent rain chances for Friday. But the zippyness of the short wave means the rain should exit Central Alabama Saturday morning paving the way for a dry afternoon and dry weather for Sunday. Clouds may stick around, though, so don’t look for a lot of sun.
Well into voodoo country, the GFS is promising a relatively flat pattern keeping temperatures more typical of late January. But a good progressive pattern keeps disturbances moving through the upper flow. It appears there could be another good snow storm for the Central US around the 29th or 30th as a new trough plunges us back into colder weather for a brief time. But the signs all point to a quick cold spell and fast moderation.
