This is one of those days when we are experiencing strong south winds across Alabama, even with no thunderstorms involved.

Based on 10:00 observations, these wind gusts were observed–all from the south:

38 mph Downtown Birmingham Skycam
41 mph Cullman Skycam
40 mph Decatur Skycam
46 mph atop Mt. Cheaha (Skycam)
38 mph Muscle Shoals Airport
40 mph Huntsville
36 mph Decatur
29 mph Tuscaloosa Airport
33 mph Evergreen

While we are at it, let’s do a quick radar update. A line of low-top showers and thunderstorms now approaching extreme NW Alabama. The line extends from West Tennessee to the NW tip of Alabama around Waterloo, then southward to Columbus, Mississippi and all the way into SE Louisiana. The stronger ones are over NE and East/Central Mississippi about ready to move into West Alabama.

Still little or no lightning, but there are strong winds involved. Further east, a separate disorganized line of showers extends from Shelby County to Mobile.

The Storm Prediction Center is studying the possibility of issuing a watch for the south half of the state and a separate one for the Tennessee Valley of extreme North Alabama.

Still looks like the worst weather for Greater Birmingham will be toward midday or early afternoon and then over into East Alabama by around midafternoon.
