The cold front blasted through the state this morning dropping temperatures to the freezing point across the Tennessee River Valley. With strong cold air advection underway today even with clearing skies, we should see highs only reach the 40s across much of the northern half of the state.

The East Coast trough will nudge eastward Monday so we’ll see a cold start but afternoon temperatures should climb into the lower 50s. That is still about 7 to 10 degrees below where we typically are for the latter part of February. The trough continues to migrate eastward as the pattern over the eastern half of the country flattens. We’ll see a number of short waves move through a relatively zonal flow through the middle of the week.

On Thursday the next significant trough begins to drop into the north central US to generate a surface low in the Central Plains. That will move quickly to the northeast dragging a cold front through the Southeast on Friday. The upper level system does not have a great deal of amplitude, so most of the dynamics are much further north, however, there could be strong to severe storms as the cold front moves through the area. The severity of the system will hinge as it does many time on the amount of instability, so we’ll be watching the development of this system as it gets closer.

That system should be out of Central Alabama by Saturday with temperatures close to seasonally expected readings.

The long range forecasts continue to show a stream of weather systems on the 3rd, the 6th, and the 9th. The system on the 9th looks indicative of a big severe weather event, however, it is also a long way into voodoo country. But interesting to watch nevertheless.
