Here’s March – AND here’s the snow. Snow was falling over a large portion of Alabama all the way from south of Montgomery to the Tennessee line. Dr. Tim has a great post below on the dynamics of the snow production.

The cold core upper low was situated over the southwest part of Alabama this morning making the turn toward the east. A surface low over Southeast Georgia will zip up the East Coast of the US over the next 24 to 36 hours creating some winter weather problems all the way from the Southeast to New England over the next couple of days. I hope no one reading this has travel up that directions at least until Wednesday.

Radar showed widespread snow across Alabama this morning with some heavier snows over the northern half of the state. I awoke to about a quarter of an inch on my deck this morning in Helena, but the snow is coming down nicely right now as I look out my window. It is somewhat rare in Alabama to have snow in the daylight which is one of my favorite things to be able to watch the snow fall – hard to get that with night time events.

Snow appears to be fairly widespread and it was pretty difficult to identify a particular band where the snow was the heaviest. I think final amounts will be 1 to 3 inches across the area with the potential for some spots getting near 5 inches. But the snow was already ending in the northwest corner of Alabama at 7:15 am, and I think much of the snow will come to an end by mid-afternoon.

It will be cold Monday and Tuesday with a gradual warming trend beginning late Tuesday. A strong ridge toward the end of the week is likely to keep us dry until the next vigorous storm system a week from tomorrow. The ridge will pump up the heat, too, with highs by Friday pushing to around 70 – lower 70s over the weekend.

Long range projections put us in a zonal flow for several days before a stronger system moves across the US around the middle of March.
