This may not be of great interest but I like to do it when cold fronts move our way. We go all the way from SE Alabama to Canada. All of these are 10 am (CDT) temperatures:
62 Troy
65 Birmingham
53 Muscle Shoals, north wind gusts 25
44 Memphis
42 Jackson, Tenn.
39 Dyersburg, Tenn., wind chill 33
32 West Plains, Mo., wind chill 25
26 St. Louis, wind chill 17
20 Columbia, Mo., wind chill 17 (Home of University of Missouri)
16 Kansas City, wind chill 5 above
10 Des Moines, wind chill 8 below zero
6 Omaha, gusts 29 mph, wind chill 15 below zero
-4 Pipestone, Minn., wind chill 28 below
-19 Garrison, N. Dak., wind chill -42
-26 Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, wind chill -49 (remember the great song, “Just a Little South of Saskatoon”
-33 Alert and Resolute (North Canada)
EXTREMES
Hottest yesterday 92 Alice, Tex.
Coldest this morning,Lower 48, -21 Wolf Point, Mont.*
Coldest in Alaska -14 Chandalar Lake, Arctic Village, Fort Yukon
* Wolf Point is in NE Montana and the only thing between it and Canada is sagebrush
From all this, you will notice that the cold front has entered NW Alabama. A strong high pressure area centered over the Northern Plains (1040 millibars) is sending the colder air toward your backyard thermometer but it will be greatly modified here as the front stalls near the Gulf Coast.
