A broad band of showers and thunderstorms (and a long one) extended all the way from NE Alabama down into the SW part of the state late tonight. The line of storms was moving generally eastward with individual storms moving NE.

At 11:45 p.m., some of the heavier ones extended from St. Clair County southwestward through Shelby and Jefferson Counties into Perry County down state. These storms will also bring some loud thunder and locally heavy rain to Calhoun, Talladega, Coosa, Chilton, Dallas and Wilcox Counties.

The storms are making quite a bit of noise. They are strong enough to produce some hail up to 1/2 inch in diameter. NWS/Birmingham mentioned that in some of their Special Weather Statements. Further west and north in Alabama a very thin line of showers extended from Pickens County all the way up to Guntersville and Scottsboro.

SEVERE THUNDERSTORM WARNING
The NWS issued a Severe Thunderstorm Warning for SE Marengo County in SW Alabama until 12:30. Doppler radar indicated the severe storm that could produce hail the size of quarters. It was located 27 miles SW of Dixons Mill or 16 miles west of Grove Hill and moving NE rapidly at 45 mph.

We will continue to watch these storms as long as they are strong and we will post updates to the Blog. Might even make a pot of coffee. Little Miss Molly is very frightened of lightning and thunder and she is in hiding upstairs. We will post a full text of the Marengo County Warning in a moment.
