What a great day we had yesterday with a nice capping inversion that kept us free of storms. But that is in the process of changing as another line/complex of storms was moving eastward across northern Mississippi this morning. The GFS continues to present a solution of holding the main rain area north of Birmingham which is certainly possible. Additional strong to severe storms are possible today in three areas – one in New England, one from Central Alabama up to southern Virginia and one back primarily in Northeast Texas. The area is along the stalled frontal boundary with the main westerlies across the Ohio Valley.
The boundary sags southward Sunday and Monday where it should be situated along the Gulf Coast. This will keep North Alabama stormy today, much of the northern half of Alabama stormy Sunday and Monday, but give us a slight break in the action on Tuesday with perhaps even slightly lower humidity. The clouds and storminess should keep temperatures in the lower 80s. And we can expect another 1 to 2 inches of rain with some spots getting higher amounts in the more intense storms.
Another strong short wave in the westerlies will move across the northern tier of the US on Wednesday and Thursday which will drag yet another front into the Southeast US by Thursday. A strong ridge building into the Southeast from the west should shut down much of the rain for Friday and Saturday. However, isolated storms may be possible since the GFS suggests the humidity will stay relatively high.
Into voodoo, a strong short wave is projected on the 19th which should clear the air. And a big ridge is forecast to move into the Southeast from the west by the end of the period around the 23rd.
