(A daily feature–well, most days)

When the good ole USA bought Alaska from Russia in 1867, would you believe that we paid only two cents per acre? Alaska is more than twice the size of Texas and Alaska, alone, makes up 1/6th of the area of the entire USA. It is so big that if you could drive from the westernmost Aleutian Island to the SE tip, it would equal driving San Francisco to Florida!

No place has such a varied climate. Mt. McKinley is the highest peak in all of North America at 20,320 feet. The population density is only slightly more than one person per square mile!

Joe Juneau is credited with discovering gold. Guess what city is named after him.

This morning, it was 6 above zero at Barrow where there is now 24 hours of daylight. The sun does not go down or come up! Anchorage had a mild 68 yesterday. Still 36 inches of snow on the ground at Whittier.
