Looks like May, 2009, will end on a tranquil note for a change after a rather wet month with several stormy weekends. But June 1st is the start of hurricane season, and we’ve already had two systems, one a tropical depression and the other a near tropical depression.

But for now we get to enjoy a very pleasant weekend as the trough over the eastern US moves off into the Atlantic and brings Alabama under a northwesterly flow pattern. This pattern should dry us out for the weekend and for several days into the upcoming week. Fog was evident in a number of locations this morning as the moist ground puts a little moisture back into the air. But the fog was quite patchy and should burn off relatively quickly.

The upper air pattern traverses into a zonal flow for the Southeast US for the start of the next work week, so I expect to see us dry. One note of caution, a northwesterly flow pattern can often bring some surprises, so we’ll have to keep an eye on developments off to our northwest to make sure nothing develops that might impact our weather.

By Wednesday and for several days toward the weekend, a front will approach from the northwest plus the atmosphere will see moisture coming back bringing with it the possibility of daily showers. I do not expect anything widespread as this time.

And peeking well into the future, aka voodoo country, there does not appear to be anything of significant to talk about. I do note the building of the heat ridge but it retreats quickly.

Don’t forget to listen to our weekly netcast anytime on the web or on iTunes. This is the show all about weather featuring many familiar voices including our meteorologists here at ABC 33/40. You can even listen here on the blog; look for the player on the top left.

And you can follow news and weather updates from ABC 33/40 on Twitter here. And, my personal Twitter feed is here if you want to keep up with the adventures and mis-adventures in my life. Twitter is a short messaging service you can receive via the web, cell phone, or IM.

I plan to have the next Weather Xtreme Video posted by 8 am or so tomorrow morning. In the meantime, I expect to enjoy a lazy day in my lounge chair sitting under the trees at Cheaha State Park watching the deer and reading a book. Such a great way to spend the last weekend of May. Godspeed.
