Lots of comment lately on 24-hour TV news networks, The Weather Channel and newspapers about Seattle’s “long dry spell.”
* True, they went 29 days without rain ending last Wednesday on June 17. Last time they had that many days in a row rainless in May/June was in1982.
* The all-time record dry spell (no rain at all) for Seattle was 51 days in 1951 between July 7 and August 29.
* Seattle seems to have a reputation of being a wet city. Maybe that is because they get measurable rain an average of 155 each year. (Compared to 117 days in Birmingham)
* However, Birmingham gets a lot more rain with an average each year of 54 inches as compared to only 37 inches in Seattle. A lot of time, the Seattle rain is light rain or drizzle.
* For sure, there is a lot of difference between Birmingham and Seattle when it comes to mid-summer heat. The average July temperature for Seattle is 65.3 degrees compared to 80.2 in Birmingham.
WEATHER LORE: Just for fun, we close this with a bit of weather lore. “An eight-day mantle of snow is like a mother to earth, but if it lasts longer, it is like a mother-in-law. –from an old French weather saying.
