TRENDING DRIER: Sure looks like the most numerous showers and storms over Alabama will be over the southern half of the state for the next five days. But, this is the middle of summer, and it is hard to totally eliminate the risk of a pop-up afternoon shower around here. Still, the general idea is for mostly dry weather over the northern half of Alabama, with the showers generally south of Montgomery and a weak surface boundary that is near U.S. 80.

Temperatures will trend upward; they really have nowhere to go but up after yesterday when highs were below 90 at all of the official reporting stations across our state. The high in Dothan was only 81 degrees; last week that same spot reported a high of 105. Look for a high close to 90 today, low 90s tomorrow and Thursday, with mid 90s by Friday and the weekend. The 00Z GFS is not quite as aggressive with the upper ridge’s eastward extent; looks like the hottest weather will continue to be west of Alabama.

THE WEEKEND: For now we are expecting highs in the 90 to 94 degree range Saturday and Sunday, with just a few isolated showers and storms around here. The deeper moisture will stay over South Alabama.

LONG RANGE: Still see nothing but fairly routine summer weather for the last week of July; hot and muggy with some risk of an afternoon shower or storm each day.

TROPICS: The Atlantic basin is quiet; tropical storm Blanca in the eastern Pacific, well off the west coast of Mexico, is moving west over open water, and should dissipate by Thursday over cooler water.

WEATHER BRAINS: Don’t forget you can listen to our weekly 30 minute netcast anytime on the web, or on iTunes.
