TODAY: A pretty decent looking short wave upper trough is passing through the Deep South today, and you have to figure that will bring scattered showers and storms to the state this afternoon. Picking out the boundary that separates drier air to the north from moist, tropical air is increasingly difficult; we figure most of the showers today will be along and east of a line from Huntsville to Tuscaloosa. The northwest corner of the state will be mostly dry. The high today should be in the 88 to 91 degree range; not bad at all for mid-July in Alabama.

REST OF THE WEEK: We must remember we are in the middle of summer, and getting dry air in here will be pretty hard to do. I am not comfortable leaving the risk of an afternoon shower or storm out of the forecast through Friday; the exact placement of the showers and storms will be up to mesoscale processes that is hard to identify in advance. Still looks like the best chance of showers will be generally in areas east and south of Birmingham where the moisture will be deeper. Drier air is forecast to ease in here on Friday, and the chance of rain for that one day looks minimal. Otherwise, expect partly sunny days with highs in the low 90s, right where we should be this time of the year. The core of the heat ridge will remain west of Alabama.

THE WEEKEND: Not much change; we will hang on to the risk of a passing shower or storm both Saturday and Sunday, mostly during the afternoon, with the best coverage over the eastern half of the state. Highs should hold mostly in the low 90s.

NEXT WEEK AND BEYOND: The GFS continues the idea of the hottest weather in the nation remaining west of Alabama through the rest of July; our weather looks very typical for mid-summer with near average temperatures and rain. And, again, no sign of any tropical trouble for now.
