ACTIVE STORMS: Today we have a classic case of “scattered afternoon showers and storms” on a summer day in Alabama. The radar has a number of strong storms, including one that has prompted a severe thunderstorm warning for parts of Shelby and Talladega counties as I write this. But, the storms are very scattered, and many spots are rain-free. The storms are not moving much, and the main threat is the potential for wet microbursts, local areas of damaging straight line winds, strong enough to knock down trees and power lines. The storms will settle down after the sun goes down tonight.
TEMPS: Birmingham has ramped up to 91 degrees at 3:00… so our 3 day string of sub-90 degree days has come to an end unfortunately.
TOMORROW THROUGH SUNDAY: Looks like the deepest moisture and most numerous showers and storms will be a little east of here, over Georgia and the Carolinas, but I sure can’t rule out a few afternoon showers and storms on a daily basis through the weekend (even though the 12Z GFS looks bone dry for Friday and Saturday). The best chance of a shower or storm will be east of I-65, with only isolated ones over the western side of the state. Afternoon highs will be mostly in the low 90s, right at seasonal averages for mid-July in Alabama.
NEXT WEEK: The GFS continues to suggest the hottest weather in the nation will remain west of Alabama next week, under the 5940 meter height contour on the 500 mb charts you can see on the Weather Xtreme video. Around here, looks like your typical July heat with highs in the low 90s and some risk of an afternoon shower or storm in a few spots. And, still no sign of life in the Atlantic basin.
