HOT WEEKEND: The upper ridge, which is centered west of Alabama and bringing some rather remarkable heat to parts of Texas and Oklahoma, will try to nose in here today and tomorrow, which will mean mostly hot and dry weather for West Alabama through the weekend with highs in the mid 90s, maybe reaching the upper 90s near the Mississippi border. For the eastern half of the state, highs tomorrow and Sunday should be in the low 90s. We can’t rule out a few pop-up afternoon storms each day, but they should be a little more numerous east of I-65.
NEXT WEEK: The GFS continues the idea of an upper trough forming over the east coast by Monday, which will push the heat ridge back to the west, and allow a back-door front to approach Alabama from the northeast. This scenario will mean an increase in the number of showers and storms Monday afternoon and Monday night, and we will begin to adjust our forecast in that direction with good model consistency. The front dissipates Tuesday, but another backdoor front shows up late in the week which could enhance the chance of showers and storms by Friday.
TROPICS: Nothing happening across the Atlantic basin, but tropical depression 4-E could become a hurricane in the Pacific early next week; see the Weather Xtreme video for details.
