The latest edition of the ABC 33/40 Weather Xtreme Video is available in the player below and on iTunes…

James Spann is a real audio expert and can come up with the lyrics for a song that fits the current weather. Well the Christmas song about all I want is my two front teeth comes to mind this morning, but I would substitute some words. “All I want for Father’s Day is some really good rain!” But that is NOT in the cards or the atmosphere today.

Summer officially begins on June 21st at 1:06 pm when the sun reaches it’s furtherest north travel called the summer solstice. For Birmingham, AL, we will have 14 hours and 23 minutes of sunshine from June 18 to June 24th. But even though summer will officially begin in a few days, it is going to be a hot, hazy summer-like day across Central Alabama today. I expect to see temperatures climb into the mid 90s with light wind and plenty of sunshine. I noted about three small showers on radar yesterday, but I doubt that we see even that many today.

An upper trough approaches from Texas on Tuesday. The best chances for rain that we’ve seen in a long time should come then with isolated showers possible on Monday. Hot is the word for Monday but Tuesday and Wednesday should see highs in the mid 80s with considerably more clouds and numerous showers to hold the temperature in check.

The surface cold front is forecast to move into South Alabama on Wednesday which will probably dry us out, however, our forecast is holding on to scattered showers for Wednesday at least for now. The front will wash out along the Gulf Coast, but the GFS is showing a broad weakness in the upper air pattern extending from the Northeast Gulf to North Texas. This weakness may be enough to keep afternoon showers popping through the end of the week and into next weekend.

Tropics remain quiet with an area lowered pressure northeast of the Bahamas, but there is no sign of any significant development.

In the really long term, the GFS is promising another eastern US trough, however, it is rather stingy with the showers. The trough pattern would be nice because it should keep the highs in check, but the lack of any good precipitation with a healthy trough makes me doubtful of the GFS solution. It would seem that such a pattern should result in much better chances of showers.

Happy Father’s Day to all you Dads out there. This is one of those times when I wish my Dad was still around so I could call him and tell him I love him. I hope you have a great Sunday and a good upcoming week. James Spann will be off on a much needed vacation, so I’ll be trying to fill his shoes during the upcoming week. But I will be posting only one Xtreme Video a day during the morning and hopefully no later than 9 am.
