TRENDING DRIER: A surface front this morning is located roughly along I-85, and we believe any showers or storms that form later today will be south of that line, leaving the northern half of the state generally rain-free. We stay dry tomorrow and Saturday, and afternoons will heat up a bit. Yesterday was the seventh consecutive day with temperatures below 90 degrees in Birmingham, and today might make 8 in a row (we are forecasting 88). But, we expect a high close to 90 tomorrow, followed by low 90s Saturday as temperatures trend back toward normal levels for mid-summer in Alabama.
NEXT RAIN: We will bring back a chance of scattered showers and storms on Sunday as a surface front approaches from the north, and with that front hanging up over the northwest corner of the state, it looks like a pretty decent chance of a few showers and storms into the first half of next week. Highs will drop back into the mid to upper 80s thanks to the increased clouds and showers.
VOODOO LAND: Peeking into August, the GFS continues the idea of a mean upper trough over the eastern U.S., with the hottest weather out west. This means temperatures could very well stay below average, and with occasional surface fronts around from time to time, we will have to dodge showers and thunderstorms most days. No sign of any heat wave issues.
TROPICAL WEATHER: The 2009 hurricane season continues to be very quiet. A large area of disturbed weather is east of the Bahamas, but upper air winds are not favorable for development, and tropical storm formation is not expected through the weekend. See the Weather Xtreme video for details.
BEACH WEATHER: Expect about 5 to 7 hours of sunshine each day through Sunday with the daily risk of scattered showers and thunderstorms. Highs along the immediate coast will be in the upper 80s, with low 90s for inland communities. A check of the sea water temperature last night at the Dauphin Island Sea Lab indicated 82 degrees (F).
