The break in the summer weather pattern is closing down – at least for a while – so we are returning to a monotonous pattern along with a somewhat monotonous forecast to go along with it.

It should remain dry today but heat returns to more seasonal values with highs generally in the lower 90s. An approaching front to our north today will sag closer, but for Central Alabama I think we will stay primarily dry on Sunday. An isolated shower or two could affect the area Sunday due to the return of moisture. Temperatures will be close to 90 with more clouds than today.

The biggest rain chances come on Monday as the front sags into the area. I think this should be the best day for many of us to get some rain in the form of showers or thunderstorms. With the moisture in place and no real air mass change on the horizon together with the establishment of the Bermuda high nosing into the eastern Gulf of Mexico, we will need to keep daily showers and thunderstorms in the forecast through next weekend. These should be the daily mainly afternoon and evening variety of showers and storms.

Severe weather today will be confined to the Ohio River Valley area and into the eastern Great Lakes along and ahead of the frontal system moving through that area. And the tropics remain quiet as we get close to closing out July.

The long range GFS projections – commonly referred to here as voodoo country – do suggest the return of the East Coast trough after several days of what might be warmer than usual weather. After this last week or so, I’m all for that!

My wife and I are still at Cheaha State Park doing volunteer work including such things as picking up litter, painting signs and street markings and overall light maintenance that the regular staff just does not have the time to get to. Yesterday I manned the front entrance collecting the meager $1 fee for park use. I am amazed at the people who try not to pay this bargain fee for the splendor of Mt. Cheaha. People do amaze me. I also took time between collections to spiff up the gatehouse a bit. Enjoy the warm and dry day and let’s hope we do get the showers that seem headed our way. Godspeed.
